Police are to use an encrypted digital radio system to prevent people from eavesdropping on their communications. (Radio New Zealand News)

Finally, police forces around the world are realizing how unsafe their internal radio communication is. Any data transmitted on the air needs to be encrypted, let alone real time information about what police officers are doing and where.

Radio scanners are cheap and widely available, and it is really hard to believe that most police departments still use outdate analog systems for day to day operations.
